There is a BIG debate surrounding AI right now.
Across all cultures, humans share one essential behavior...
That is the ability to think critically💡
Now, if you are like me, and have ADHD it would look more like...the ability to think, think, think, and think some more!
Our thoughts are guided by our emotions, circumstances, beliefs, and general surroundings.
So our question of this newsletter, does AI have the ability to think critically like a human can?
By the end of this blog, you will enter the grand debate about AI and determine once and for all, is AI able to actually replace a human's ability to think critically?
Howdy, y'all! It's the Business Cowgirl here, in another broadcast of the AI Playbook Newsletter tackling the main objection to AI together.
Now, never in one email could we solve all of the world's problems, so we won't try.
BUT, we can shed some light on humans vs computers and by pointing out to further understand our differences can help us all find our footing in the new age world we are all headed toward.
Reality is, change is imminent, so strap in because one way or another the AI train is here to stay! (Or run us over...TBD!)
Understanding the differences in how we each think will help us understand better what AI can do...
and what AI can't do...
Take yourself back to high school for a second...not trying to traumatize anyone, but think back to your English and Math classes.
Both had commonalities including a designated teacher, chairs to sit in, and both contributed to your overall education.
However, sitting through those two classes could not be more different!
English is about theorizing, brainstorming, debating interpretation, and ultimately creating new thoughts from the books and thought leaders that came before us.
In contrast, Math is about solutions, undebatable answers, interpreting the information being provided as is, and ultimately students face the assessment of being right or wrong on their answers.
Perhaps oversimplifying a bit, but it serves to paint the bigger picture that while English and Math both provide necessary education and basic life skills, their approach and outcome could not be more different.
That is AI verse Humans [English vs. Math]
Humans are the English students relishing in the creativity of new thoughts guided by the information provided, but ultimately being encouraged to think outside the bounds of what has already previously been discussed and interpreted.
Versus AI being the Math students. Math students use the information provided to find the correct answer. The embellishment of strategy only varies the time required to ultimately end up at the same destination.
Again oversimplifying, I know, but keep rolling with me on this thought exercise...
What if...you approached your English class like a Math student (& your Math class like an English student)...what would happen...?
In English, while debating the theme of a book (as a Math student) would look like attempting to find one correct answer, instead of the numerous nuances humans could theorize...
In Math, while trying to plug in numbers to a calculator (as an English student) would look like attempting to type in "2 and/or 3 and possibly 7 as well," to which your calculator (if it could talk) would say, "Make up your mind!"
As you can see there are different types of thought processes and different styles are better suited for different situations...
All this to say, AI and Humans are the epitome of the English approach verse the Math approach.
Neither is right or wrong, but are simply different and each thrive in their own best set of circumstances!
AI excels in repetitive, data-driven tasks and decision-making, but it falls short in areas of human expertise like creativity, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and complex problem-solving.
The future of AI lies in collaborative partnerships, where machines augment human capabilities, allowing individuals to concentrate on higher-level tasks requiring human ingenuity.
It's crucial to perceive AI as a productivity-enhancing tool, not a complete replacement for human involvement, fostering a symbiotic relationship between technology and human expertise.
BUT WAIT?! Aren't computers extremely powerful...??
Now you are saying algorithms (aka computer intelligence) has limits?!?!
The reality is when writing a computer program the human developer would give the algorithm instructions on, "If, Then" situations.
An If, Then situation instruction in an algorithm will look like: If the human clicks this button, then provide this outcome.
That is just one layer deep and of course the reason we are not all not computer programmers is because writing a computer algorithm becomes attempting to write an algorithm to account for every potential outcome under the sun...!
At minimum, it is an overwhelming thought, but the truly passionate that have attempted to achieve this goal have produced the concept of "AI."
But what does a computer do when confronted with an unprecedented If, Then situation ...?
Back when I was consulting businesses on how to design their CRM automated architecture this was a constant problem that I ran into with human designers...
Computers need black and white simple, straight forward instructions with a couple varied outcomes (and pro tip an opt-out path!)
Humans love living in the color with all the millions of potential outcomes and solutions, with only the sky being the limit!
So what happens when a computer is given colorful human instructions?
Computer algorithms require straight forward solution oriented problems (like our Math example from earlier) with predetermined outcomes.
Humans have the ability to create new solutions with each problem they are confronted with or sometimes referred to as the ability to think "outside the box."
I think it is important to point out (again) that neither approach is right or wrong, but simply different and each excel in their best set of circumstances!
Which brings us to the inevitable conclusion that:
1. Humans and Computers fundamentally think differently
2. Only one of them is able to think "outside the box"
Have you ever thought about the saying, "Reading between the lines...?"
This quote is going to help us really run this newsletter's true purpose across the finish line!
As a quote it represents words that can be interpreted many ways:
1. Reading between the lines as a literal instruction of attempting to read the blank space between lines of text.
2. Or to read between the lines of the context and develop a personal interpretation of what isn't being said directly.
Now based on this newsletter I feel confident that we all now know that a computer will go with answer 1 and humans will go with answer 2!
Which brings us to our main point, that AI can NOT think outside the box!
AI is capable of amazing feats that humans can't achieve, but the vice versa is ALSO TRUE.
Humans are capable of feats AI can't achieve either!
Since we now understand this fact let's revisit the AI objection at hand which is that AI will eventually replace humans.
Given everything we now know...
Do you think that is truly possible in the current state of affairs?
I am not here to tell you what you think, only to share the necessary information for you to make an informed decision.
Me personally, I don't believe current AI can replace a human's ability to truly think abstractly.
Which doesn't make it useless, it just makes it a tool just like any other.
Like all tools, it has it's abilities and incapabilities...
Things AI excels at are:
So approach AI the same way you would approach your salad...with a fork, not a spoon and preferably a bowl instead of a plate.
Meaning you capitalize on it's strengths and understand it's weaknesses so that you can compensate within your business.
AI very much has a purpose within business operations; however, only by truly understanding what AI can and can't do will you be able to employ it correctly!
Now I do also believe that the next generation of AI will be able to "think outside the box," but until then....
Do you create content for your business?
Meaning social media posts, blogs, newsletters, videos, online courses, or anything else creative??
Well then you HAVE to watch this new video that just dropped!
Never stress about creative content topics ever again and simply ask the public (aka your target audience!)
AI and technology doesn't have to be intimidating because ultimately computers will just do what they are told so your main job is just to simply figure out what needs to be said!
